The Graphic Design Senior Thesis at SUNY New Paltz is a two-semester exploration where students research, develop, and execute a project that aligns with contemporary and traditional design practices. Through in-depth research, expert consultations, and iterative prototyping, students create a body of work that informs and engages a defined audience. The thesis is a personal milestone and a professional portfolio piece, demonstrating conceptual depth, technical proficiency, and innovative thinking.
CATALOG
For Thesis 2021, I collaborated with Madelyn Ma and Amy Papaelias to develop the catalog’s overall design, ensuring a visually compelling and well-structured presentation. My role included layout design, typography selection, image curation, and production coordination, bringing together a publication that not only highlights the students' work but also reflects the creative identity of the graduating class.
LAYOUT & GRID SYSTEM
The Thesis 2021 catalog follows a structured and versatile three-column grid system with a 0.5-inch margin on all sides and a 0.1667-inch gutter. This layout ensures a clean and organized presentation while allowing flexibility for text and imagery. The three-column structure enhances readability and provides a balanced composition, while the carefully considered gutter spacing maintains a comfortable separation between elements. Images and text are arranged dynamically within the grid, sometimes spanning multiple columns to create visual interest and hierarchy. By maintaining a consistent typographic structure and alignment, this layout effectively showcases the work of graduating students in a refined and professional manner.
TRANSLATING WEB TO PRINT
Madelyn Ma and I transformed the Thesis 2021 website design into a catalog by carefully adapting its typography, grid system, and color palette for print. We maintained the website’s clean and structured aesthetic while refining layouts for readability and flow. By preserving key design elements, we ensured a seamless visual connection between digital and print, creating a cohesive and engaging experience across both formats.
